HE'E NALU

Waves are a universal presence in nature, with ocean waves holding a timeless fascination for humanity. In Hawaiian culture, surfing is revered as an art form -He'e Nalu, or "wave sliding". Drawing inspiration from this deep cultural connection and the mesmerizing rhythms of the sea, we designed and fabricated a series of interactive lighting sculptures for VIVID Sydney in Sydney, Australia.

Like the ocean, the installation engages the senses through movement, sound, and light, unfolding in two distinct scenes: the calm and the wave.

In the calm, soft, ambient light bathes the columns while gentle sounds of the beach create a tranquil coastal atmosphere. In contrast, the wave brings a sudden surge of energy. Light pulses with greater intensity as a wave of illumination travels rapidly along the corridor. Visitors are invited to stand still and let the wave pass over them - or choose a wave and follow it as it flows.

The installation cycles between stillness and motion, light and shadow. As the color palette shifts from warm oranges to deep blues, it echoes the stunning hues reflected on the ocean's surface at sunset, offering a poetic reminder of nature's rhythms.
